Nile Ranger left Newcastle United on a temporary basis Thursday, joining Sheffield Wednesday on loan.
Hopefully he'll be departing for good this summer. Ranger has become the ultimate example of just how foolish it is to assume that potential will automatically turn into production.
Newcastle made that mistake when it gave the then-19-year-old a 5 1/2-year contract late in 2010, a decision based on 1 1/2 seasons of first-team contributions in which Ranger had scored three goals. To be fair, Ranger had mostly been used as an impact substitute and had shown an intriguing combination of size and speed.
But Ranger has never looked like a particularly skilled player. Nor has he ever been the sort of hard worker who could address that deficiency. Even worse, he clearly just doesn't get it. Anyone who's seen his nonsensical Twitter account - or read his lengthy criminal record - can confirm as much.
Maybe, just maybe, the light will go on for Ranger at some point and he can carve out a career as a physical striker in the mold of Cameron Jerome (although that seems so unlikely that we should probably apologize to Mr. Jerome for even making the comparison). Either way, Newcastle needs to make Ranger someone else's problem as soon as possible.
The boy is a complete idiot , don't care about his potential , a striker at Newcastle that's English , anybody that loves football would die for an opportunity like that. Waste of space bbbrraaapp bbrrraaappp

Why would you want to get rid of a young talented striker?
Sure he's made some mistakes but that's because he is so young.
I hope he gets it together, scores lots of goals for Sheff Wednesday and plays so well that Pardew has to include him.
He's on our books why would anyone want him to fail?
C'mon Nile ... show these so-called NUFC fans what a good striker you really are!!

He has been given chance after chance to conduct himself properly , he is a spoilt brat , how can you say he deserves to play for Newcastle United ? The boy is a tool , we need characters at Newcastle that are focused on Newcastle and not replaca fire arms and drink driving

You mean he's black and posed for a photo with a replica weapon ... that's the real reason for all the hate.
Of course no one will admit to that ...
How dare he ...

He's black ? What planet u on mate ? That has no relevants at all do the way he behaves , I don't want ranger at Newcastle because of what he's like not because he is f@kin black , do you know what your talking about ? Have you seen the countless chances the boy has had ? I really don't see your point of view , you think a young striker can behave how he likes with assault chargers , drink driving incidents ect and still get the opportunity to represent Newcastle United ?
Posted by: Jamesnufc86 | 03/23/2012 at 11:52 AM
Danny Simpson has had driving charges this year.
Kevin Nolan had lots of driving charges last year.
Andy Carroll had a series of assault cases and an internal fight with S Taylor that fractured his jaw ..
Then there's Joey Barton ...
So the precedent says that YES he can still play for Newcastle United.
Even if he goes to jail ...
But don't pose with a plastic gun ...

He's black ? What planet u on mate ?
The one with all the racial hatred, homophobia and religious intolerance ... you?
Posted by: geoff777 | 03/23/2012 at 12:04 PM
Yes well done , all these incidents have one thing in common it happened once , people learn from their mistakes bar Joey barton a man which defines the word dick head

WHAT ??! Ha ha are u pissed ? Racial hate and religious intolerance ?? Ha ha I hope ur sitting down mate
Posted by: Jamesnufc86 | 03/23/2012 at 12:11 PM
Not that this STILL has any relevance but I'm mixed race ! Ha ha I hate my brothers lol dick

Suarez is a racist.
Lots of blacks are racist.
Poles hate Russians.
Muslims hate Jews.
Christians hate Muslims.
Christans hate otrher Christians ...
So a photo of a black youth holding a gun had no effect on the oh so tolerant (pure as the driven snow) mainly white NUFC fans ... (you have your head in the sand)
Everyone hates everyone ... that is why you called someone that you don't know, who is making a point you disagree, with a "dick".

It sounds like your not particularly liked yourself , naming random sections of minority groups that "hate" eachother brings no substance to you argument and is a massive generalization

It sounds like your not particularly liked yourself ... doh ... pathetic.
My point was the "Gangsta" photo of Nile has a lot more to do with the hatred against him because Simpson, Nola, Carroll and Barton have all had recent similar or a lot worse run ins with the "law".
But we have to get Nile out of the club while Nolan Carroll & Barton were forgiven.
9% of Byker voted BNP recently ....

OK guys, this has nothing to do with race. Ranger is a dumbass, plain and simple. He also isn't nearly as talented as he's been made out to be. Big, strong and fast, but not much skill there. It's been well documented that he's not a very hard worker, either.
Posted by: Tom | 03/23/2012 at 12:47 PM
He was given a 5 and a half year contract last season.
Obviously G.Carr, Pardew, Beardsley and Donachie thought he was talented enough.
Doh .... Should have asked Tom too!!!
Posted by: geoff777 | 03/23/2012 at 12:56 PM
Of course someone has to bring race into this when it obviously has nothing to do with it. And since when are Nolan, Carrol, and Barton even still on Newcastle? Once again, your argument is completely irrelevant to this article.

good riddance to ranger. obviously hasn't matured into an adult. rather we have a roster spot filled by someone who wants to work hard. maybe he peaked early at 19 and thats why we gave him a 5 year contract, thinking he would get better but guess not.
Posted by: Jaeger | 03/23/2012 at 11:59 PM
AP didn't give him the 5 1/2yr deal CH did if i'm not mistaken. All he has done since Pardew has gotten here is get in fights, drive drunk, play with guns and come into work late repeatedly. Not having signed him... why would AP want to keep him from what he has shown recently??
Race??..really??... Grow up Geoff.

Gotta agree that he needs to go. Too many opportunities he has been given and doesn't learn. With Pardew at the helm, behavior like this won't be tolerated. I would rather have a player that loves putting on the black and white rather than a player that likes assaulting people and not learning from his mistakes.
