On The Air: Not Wiggin' Out

PardewMustGoOn this week's I Wish I Was A Geordie podcast, the three blogsketeers provide group therapy for each other and the world following Newcastle United's evisceration at Wigan. Also: Is there hope against Chelsea? When is a formation not a formation? Would we feel guilty cheering for Newcastle against our favorite MLS clubs (if we had them)? And what does it all mean, anyway? Click below to hear the latest episode, or visit our iTunes page to listen to all our podcasts, rate them (5 stars recommended) and subscribe.

I enjoyed the podcast. I live in Cincinnati and support the Crew. But when Newcastle visited, I wore the NUFC strip. A little bummed to hear, Bob?, didn’t really like the stadium much. True, it’s not a great stadium but considering it’s been open since 1999 and was the first soccer specific stadium in the league, it has served us well. Sure, it doesn’t have the fancy covering over the seats or great amenities, but it’s our home. Go Crew! BTW, the US Nats are 3-0-0 against Mexico there!

Well, Jeff, let's just say that coming off Kansas City, almost any stadium was going to look a little outdated. On the other hand, KC's stadium is in the parking lot of a mega-mall. I did like the Nordecke and I'm looking forward to returning for a match and sitting with the home supporters. The Crew fans rocked and I liked the city itself a lot, as I do Cincinnati - one of my best friends lives there and I visit regularly. Having a chili craving just thinking about it...

I live in Denver and support the Rapids as I would support a single A baseball team. If you would feel guilty for supporting the Toon when they played an MLS side, you don't really bleed black and white, and you aren't a real supporter of the club. If Newcastle came to DSG Park I would absolutely wear my Newcastle top and would hope that they demolished the Rapids by four or five goals.

I would agree with Matt K. in saying that you don't bleed black and white if you would support an MLS team over Newcastle. There's nothing wrong with that - it just means that you bleed for your MLS team, if you bleed for any team at all. That doesn't mean you can't still be a Newcastle fan, but in my opinion, you have to have a mental hierarchy. There's not really an equivalent in American sports, but the closest I can think of is collegiate sports, where someone might be an alumnus of a Big 10 school, but kind of has teams they he cheers for in the ACC or the Big 12. Nothing wrong with it, as long as you know whose side you'd be on when they come face to face.

Also, since we're talking about exhibition games (until Newcastle and an MLS team face off in the Club World Cup in a few years), I don't think it's problematic to just root for a well-played game that doesn't result in any injuries. I think Newcastle has made it obvious this season that exhibition games have no direct correlation on the actual season.

I agree NUFC are my life and favorite team by a mile. I would definitely sit with Toon supporters if they played the Union and I have season tickets in the Union supporters section. It is a good time and just fun to watch matches.
