As Americans who've supported Newcastle United for only a small fraction of the 41 years since the last Toon triumph at Old Trafford, we can only guess at the meaning of Saturday's landmark victory for longer-suffering fans. On the pitch this Rooney-less Man U squad - in what manager David Moyes delicately termed afterward a "transitional period" - was clearly not representative of the club's legend. But Newcastle piled up a decided advantage in chances and possession, declined to park their bus as time wound down and salted the match away with the confidence of a club that deserves its top-6 spot on the table.
Beyond that, words fail. So here are three pictures to make our three customary post-match points. We invite Newcastle fans young and old to comment and put today's history in its full perspective.
I was 13 the last time we done this, get in!!

Happy days. We never had a better chance to beat them at OT but we still needed to overcome the psychological hurdle; a bit like beating up your older brother, even after you've outgrown him. This has been a fixture Man U would use to up their goal difference in recent years, despite several memorable wins against them at SJP
The most satisfying thing is that we deserved the points. Their attacks looked desperate and rushed whereas our build up was more measured - breaking when we needed to, and probably even had another gear in us had we gone behind. Very different to the Spurs win, when they at least mounted a late salvo on Krul's goal.
Willo and Colo were colossal. Tiote, Anita and Santon crisp and intelligent in their play. I've been on the fence about Sissoko but his performance was full of passion, movement and athleticism.
We've already beaten Tottenham and Man U away, Chelsea at home, and drawn with Liverpool. Arsenal will be another test of our top 6 credentials - and of course Southampton will be no push overs. We know we can compete with the big boys this season, but we still need more firepower to build on the narrow win mentality if we are to end up in the top 6 or 8. A positive striker signing in January, along the Cisse-impact lines, would be very astute.
One to savour. HTL!!!!

5 minutes before the match stared, I knew we were going to win the ( check my Facebook). I am only 21 years old, and have been an avid NUFC fan since I was 13. The joy of beating my father's team (he's a huge man u fan) at his own ground was an amazing feeling. It's always fun talking mad shit to you father (when it comes to football) I remember last year's 3-0 win over United at St James.. This win was better than that.
I have never been a fan Of Williamson, but he was the man of the match in my book. He swept up everything that came near him.
Great match.

When I can think of enough words to justify this result I'll be straight back here. But you might be waiting another 40 years for it.

Sissoko just pwned little Evra on the goal...he looked as physically dominate as he did in the away Aston Villa match last season. Still my money is on Tiote for MOM. To play controlled and not give up (to my recollection) a lot of silly free kicks and to avoid being carded in the match was massive. For Willo and Colo, it must be wonderful having the Ivorian Bull policing the area between the 18 and the halfline.
Minor note: I think it might be time for all of us who have been on the fence abou those "Brazil" kits to admit that bright colors (remember the orange kits two years ago) seem to suit us well. I don't know what it is, but bright colors seem to bring out a lot of good play.

it sure beats those terrible red jerseys from last year! don't think we got any points when we wore those.
really liked those orange ones too.
big match against southampton. can't afford to lose but a draw isn't a bad result, they seem to be in slighty poorer form than their great start to the season.
